Every percentage
needs context.

What we calculate, what we leave out, and why it matters.

Effective tax, not the headline rate

Effective income tax is the modeled annual income tax divided by your annual input. A 40% marginal bracket does not mean 40% of all your income is taxed. Progressive bands are applied slice by slice.

Gross estimate versus taxable income

Gross salary estimate applies only the allowances and credits explicitly documented in the country guide. Many models omit employment expenses, social-insurance deductions and personal reliefs. Taxable income mode assumes you have already deducted eligible expenses; it does not add personal allowances or credits again. Both modes are simplified national-tax scenarios, not comparable full payroll assessments.

After income tax is not full take-home pay

The remaining amount is input minus modeled income tax. Social insurance, compulsory pension, professional schemes, student loans, health insurance and other payroll deductions are excluded. Some countries also levy regional taxes or surtaxes not covered by the national model. These limits are stated in the individual guides.

Cross-country currency comparison

The same economic income is converted into each country's local currency before applying its thresholds. Results are converted back to your input currency. Dated reference exchange rates come from Frankfurter's ECB-based service. Refreshing rates needs an internet connection. Missing rates never silently default to 1:1. Exchange conversion does not account for purchasing power or living costs.

Different tax years

Tax periods do not always align. United Kingdom figures use 2026/27; France uses 2025 income assessed in 2026. Every country shows its period. Comparing periods does not predict future taxes.

Doctors and private practice

A hospital employee usually follows ordinary employment income rules. A self-employed doctor may deduct practice costs, use a special business regime, face professional pension obligations or receive payments subject to withholding. Do not enter total clinic turnover as an employee's salary.

Coverage & source policy

There are currently 35 implemented national models. The worldwide directory contains additional countries awaiting research, with no invented percentage or estimate. Official tax authorities are preferred; PwC Worldwide Tax Summaries supports selected national schedules. The underlying sources are linked on each country page. Latest source check: 12 October 2026.
