🇵🇹 How tax works
in Portugal.

2026 · National income tax guide

The calculation, explained.

Mainland Portugal applies nine progressive bands, plus solidarity tax of 2.5% between €80,000 and €250,000 and 5% above €250,000.

Employment deductions, personal credits, subsistence-income protection, social insurance and special expatriate/island regimes are excluded.

For doctors

This model is for ordinary individual employment income. Private-practice receipts, professional expenses and medical pension arrangements need a separate assessment. A hospital's withholding is not necessarily your final annual tax.

Tax brackets · EUR

Each rate applies only to the income inside that band.
